Problem
-
Spotify is generally popular with students, but Spotify is not fully realizing the potential to monetize them. 20% of college-age students who are on Spotify are not on the Premium plan.
-
Users struggle to find direct ways to share music with peers through Spotify’s available features. Because we don’t directly offer anything for social activity on the platform, users have to work around the app / find unofficial ways of using it to achieve this purpose.
Goal
I wanted to add new premium-only features on mobile for user-to-user social engagement. I believed that expanding from personal music discovery to social music discovery would be a way to leverage our users’ own social networks to promote the product.
Process
As an avid Spotify user myself, I had fun brainstorming features that I would personally use.

I polled 50 friends in my dorm that night, and the fan favorites were the following:
-
Artists being able to live stream their album drop
-
Groups being able to stream with friends during an album drop
These two features married well together, and I jumped right into reinventing the album drop.
